Are Liverpool preparing pre-contact offer for Barcelona defender Montoya?

Are Liverpool preparing to offer Barcelona right back Martin Montoya a pre-contract offer to secure the highly rated defenders services? Well according to reports that have appeared via German newspaper Bild today, this could very well be the case.

The Mirror is is claiming Bild have said the Reds are going to offer a pre-contract to the 22-year-old defender who is out of favour at the Nou Camp and is struggling for playing time under new boss Gerardo Martino.

Unsubstantiated quotes from Montoya’s agent are doing the rounds suggesting Liverpool are “ahead of the pack” to sign the Spaniard.

Last month Talksport are reported that Montoya's agent had said that "This summer there were interesting talks with Italian clubs like Inter Milan and Napoli, as well as Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. Anything is possible in June."

Although highly rated and having come from the famed La Masia academy, the question could be asked is whether Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is currently in the market for a right back, considering the reds currently have Glen Johnson, Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly that can all play that role.

The argument against that could be that Glen Johnson is approaching 30, and the age at which the club could still recoup some of the money they paid out to sign him from Portsmouth in 2009, and also that Wisdom and Kelly could both be moved into the centre of the Reds defence, so a move for Montoya could make sense considering by time the 2014/2015 season starts Johnson could no longer be at the club.
