Aquilani poised for Juve return
21 Aug 2010 - 14:28:07
Liverpool have reached agreement with Juventus for Alberto Aquilani to return to Serie A on loan.
The two clubs have agreed a season-long loan for the 26-year-old midfielder, who has struggled to make an impact at Anfield following his £17million arrival last summer.
Aquilani was signed as a direct replacement for Xabi Alonso but arrived in England carrying an ankle injury and made just 18 Premier League appearances last term.
The Italy international was omitted from the squad that faced Trabzonspor in the Europa League on Thursday night to ensure he would be able to play European football for his new club.
"For Aquilani, this year it is very important that he plays regular football every week as the number one man on the team-sheet," explained manager Roy Hodgson after the 1-0 play-off first leg victory over the Turkish club.
"I can't promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy could help him in that respect it might be good for all parties.
"It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year."
Aquilani, who has won 11 international caps during his time at former club AS Roma, will join Juventus subject to passing a medical on Monday.
