Aquilani enjoys reserve outing

Summer signing Alberto Aquilani played for 15 minutes for Liverpool's reserves on Wednesday night as he finally made his debut the Anfield club.

The £20million signing from AS Roma came on towards the end of a 2-0 second-string victory over Sunderland at Prenton Park.

Knee surgery shortly before signing on at Anfield had kept Aquilani in the treatment room during the opening months of his time in the Premier League.

Aquilani was signed by Rafael Benitez as a direct replacement for Xabi Alonso following the £25million sale of the Spain international to Real Madrid.

But despite his cameo at Prenton Park which was watched by Reds co-owner George Gillett, the Italy international is not expected to be in the first-team squad for Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester United despite Liverpool losing their last four games.
