Aquilani closes in on return

Summer signing Alberto Aquilani could make his first Liverpool appearance for the reserves on Wednesday evening.

The 25-year-old Italian midfielder joined the Reds in a £20million deal in August but is yet to make his debut.

Knee surgery shortly before signing on at Anfield has kept him in the treatment room, but the former AS Roma midfielder is now set to step up his comeback with a reserve-team outing.

Aquilani, who was signed as a replacement for Xabi Alonso when the Spaniard joined Real Madrid, could be included in the squad to face Sunderland reserves on Wednesday evening.

However, even if he does play against he Black Cats, he will not be included in the first-team squad to take on Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Spain winger Albert Riera will miss the visit of the league leaders to Anfield with a hamstring injury.
