Alonso welcomes Real talks

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is pleased to see progress being made between his current club and Real Madrid, with talks over a possible move having got underway.

The 27-year-old Spain international is known to be eager to return to his homeland and head to the Bernabeu, although Reds boss Rafa Benitez is keen to try and tempt Alonso to stay put.

Alonso is quoted as telling AS: "It's reassuring to know that Madrid and Liverpool are talking seriously now.

"I decided a long time ago to stay on the margin of everything that was happening. My stance has been clear, as you all know.

"I'm a professional and I must wait for an agreement to be reached, but I hope it is resolved soon, for better or for worse."
