Alonso transfer edges closer

Reports suggest that Real Madrid have agreed to meet Liverpool's asking price for Spain international Xabi Alonso.

The long-running transfer saga could finally be resolved this week after Anfield officials met with the Galacticos' executive director-general Jose Angel Sanchez before the Reds' pre-season game against Espanyol.

The Liverpool Daily Post claims that Real will pay Euros 35million to secure Alonso's services with a further Euros 2.5million to be paid at a later date.

Liverpool's managing director, Christian Purslow, said of the meeting between representatives from the two clubs: "This has only served to put our positions on the table. We need to continue talking.

"Rafa (Benitez) arranged this knowing what was coming. It was important that we know. So far, most of what is being said is a lie. We were negotiating through the press. It makes no sense.

"Now, I have been impressed by Madrid and Jose Angel. Benitez and Jose Angel are friends and will remain so."

If the transfer goes through this week, Alonso could travel with the rest of the Real Madrid squad on their tour of North American, starting with a clash against Toronto FC on Friday.
