Alonso passes Real medical
05 Aug 2009 - 14:32:19
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has completed his move to Real Madrid after passing a medical at the Bernabeu.
The 27-year-old had let it be known that he wanted to leave Anfield earlier in the summer and has finally got his wish after sealing his transfer to the Spanish capital for a fee of around £30million.
Alonso joined Liverpool in the summer of 2004 from Real Sociedad and went gone on to score 18 goals in 210 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.
He almost left Merseyside 12 months ago, coming close to joining Italian giants Juventus, before returning to the fold and enjoying a fine season for Rafa Benitez's side.
Real have also signed Alvaro Arbeloa, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Esteban Granero, Raul Albiol and Karim Benzema this summer but technical director Jorge Valdano insists there will be no more new arrivals before the start of the season.
He said: "With this signing, the chapter is now closed on transfers.
"Before the start of the pre-season, the coach Manuel Pellegrini told us it was necessary to strengthen two positions - the defence and the midfield, and that is what we have done."
