Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has revealed Xabi Alonso could have expected some harsh words had his 60-yard shot against Newcastle United not ended up in the back of the net.
Alonso struck 11 minutes from time, with the help of a slip from Magpies goalkeeper Steve Harper, to secure a 2-0 victory at Anfield, after Dirk Kuyt had put Liverpool in control in the 29th minute with his first goal for the club.
Benitez told the Daily Post: "I was thinking about telling him off when he had the shot because I could see Gerrard running forward and wide, but when I saw it go in I was very happy about that! It was an amazing goal.
"His goal at Luton was really good but this one was much better. He knew what he was doing.
"I am always talking to him about this in training sessions. This morning I said to be careful because if he gets it wrong he might injure himself.
"It's not easy to score goals like that but he can score more goals from distance because he has a good shot. But Xabi played well."
