Alonso doubtful on Reds stay
23 Jul 2009 - 08:59:35
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has refused to pledge his future to the club, amid continuing talk of a big-money move to Real Madrid.
The 27-year-old Spain international is currently with the Reds on their pre-season tour of the Far East, but sat out a 1-1 draw with Thailand in Bangkok.
He is reportedly keen on a return to his homeland, but Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is desperate to persuade Alonso to stay at Anfield.
"It's difficult to give any guarantees. For now, I'm just enjoying myself in Thailand," Alonso is quoted as telling the Daily Mirror.
Meanwhile, Reds stalwart Jamie Carragher has urged Alonso to stay in England and help the Reds challenge for a first league title in two decades.
He added: "The feeling within the squad is he is a top player and you do not want to lose your top players.
"Hopefully it can be sorted out as quickly as possible.
"If the club thinks it is in the best interests of the club, sometimes you have to do what is in the best interests of the club.
"But that's a private matter for the manager and the club."
