Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has revealed that he considered retiring during the height of his recent injury problems.

The Denmark international has returned to first-team contention this month following a pre-season which was dominated by a back injury.

Agger underwent an operation in July and the defender has admitted that he had considered his future in professional football.

The 24-year-old centre-half has been dogged by injury problems during his time at Anfield.

"My back was hurting so badly that I considered stopping playing," he revealed.

"I asked myself if it was worth continuing playing.

"When you can't even lift your own child out of bed, then something is terribly wrong."
