Agger's call to Christian Eriksen to join him at Liverpool may not work, but what else could he do?

Danish starlet Christian Eriksen is likely to leave Ajax in the summer, but his destination is yet to be decided. Whilst he has been consistently linked with Liverpool, it now seems the Champions’ League finalists Borussia Dortmund are elbowing their way to the front of the queue. Liverpool centre-back and Danish national team mate Daniel Agger however thinks that Anfield could be the ideal home for the player, and wants Eriksen to join him there.

Once seriously courted by Sir Alex Ferguson to join Manchester United, Eriksen has resisted the blandishments of suitor clubs for the last couple of years, and his Dutch club has watched in comfort has his price has risen. The time now appears right for both to cash in. This summer will probably see the Dane leave Amsterdam for pastures new.

Of late, Liverpool have been heavily linked with the player, and the type of controlled possession football espoused by Anfield manager Brendan Rogers, seems a good fit for the Eriksen. Latterly though, the rival of German football, brought into sharp relief by the Bundesliga’s monopoly of the champions’ League has meant a rethink may be in order. With Borrussia Dortmund already resigned to losing Mario Goetze to Bayern Munich, and with Robert Lewandowski also primed to leave – possibly to the same club, there’s an opportunity for manager Jurgen Klopp to reinvigorate his team by investing the incoming pile of Euros, and Eriksen may be on the list. The player has stated recently that he had nor considered German football to be al likely destination for him, until recently, but now can see an attraction – especially with Dortmund and the way that they play. Liverpool however have not given up on the player, and Agger’s statement demonstrates their keenness to get their man.

Whilst Rogers continues his impressive rebuilding of the Liverpool squad, Eriksen very much fits the bill as the sort of player he would like to recruit. With Steven Gerrard seeking a deeper role from almost quarter-back role, the need for a more forceful central midfielder is clear. It’s a role that neatly fits the Dane. Agger’s call to his compatriot may cur little ice in the final analysis, but there’s merit in the argument to encourage Eriksen. Capturing one of Europe’s top young talented players would be just the sort of statement of intent that the club require to convince both their fans and players – both current and potential – that the Anfield outfit is on the way back.

Given the player’s espoused admiration for Dortmund, and their requirement for such a playmaker, it may be that the Reds will fall short, but there’s a desire to try and make it happen, and Liverpool need to be seen to be dining on the top table again, so don’t be too surprised if Rogers lands the Dane. Agger may not win the argument, but at least he’s played his card for the club, what else could Agger do?
