A closer look at Liverpool target Kyriakos Papadopoulos

Kyriakos Papadopoulos is on the verge of becoming a Liverpool player it seems. The only problem Liverpool fans should have with this is the sizeable amount it will cost for them to place his name on the back of their shirts for next season.

The fee being rumoured to have been agreed between Liverpool and Schalke is around the £13 million mark, which could be seen as a relatively good price for a very young, very talented defender.

However this fee has apparently been agreed for quite some time, if one is to believe the Greek newspaper sport day, with the apparent announcement of the arrival set for after the Liverpool squad return from their tour of Thailand.

It has also been hinted though, that due to Papadopoulos’s injury problems Brendan Rodgers may look to secure a loan deal initially for the player, until he is satisfied that any past injuries are no longer a problem.

Papadopoulos spent much of last season on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury and was also forced to undergo surgery, hence Rodgers trepidation. However Schalke may not wish for this to be an option as they would prefer the transfer fee as a means of reinvestment into the squad. Also they could surely argue that the passing of any medical that the Liverpool staff perform on the player should be enough of a means of assessing the extent of their injury concerns.

Either way, whether Papadopoulos arrives on Merseyside as a loan signing or a full transfer, it should be seen as very good business by Rodgers. With Jamie Carragher no longer screeching words of footballing wisdom to the players around him a commanding Centre Back is needed to take the reigns, Papadopoulos fits this mould for sure.

Also with this addition to the club, Rodgers could give Skrtel his wish of a move away. With the Slovakian look set on following in Reina’s footsteps to Napoli.
