Imps go down in penalty shootout

31 July 2009 14:47
Ben May bagged the Iron's equaliser four minutes into stoppage time at Sincil Bank after Andy Hutchinson had put City into the lead in the 15th minute as United claimed the trophy for the third consecutive year. The Imps nearly doubled their lead as Danny Hone's header was cleared off the line by Jake Picton and they were made to rue that missed chance as May blasted home to take the game to spot-kicks. Sam Togwell scored Scunthorpe's first penalty before Josh Lillis saved from Stefan Oakes but May and Hutchinson both netted in the second round. Matt Sparrow gave City a lifeline after hitting the crossbar but Lillis pulled off another save from Kern Miller before Rory Coleman and Luca Coleman-Carr both hit the target. That left Kevan Hurst with the vital spot-kick and he slotted it home to give Scunthorpe the win.
