O's open up with victory

Two goals in as many second-half minutes by Jay Simpson and Paul McCallum gave Leyton Orient a 2-0 win over Barnet.

What had been a turgid affair came to life halfway through the second period when the O's, relegated from Sky Bet League One at the end of last season, increased the tempo and they were soon rewarded.

Midfielder Dean Cox drilled a cross into the box where Simpson, with his back to goal, brought the ball under control before spinning to send his shot past Graham Stack.

That was the lift the home side needed and they immediately followed it up when full-back Sean Clohessy crossed into the box. McCallum challenged goalkeeper Stack and the ball fell to the striker, who lashed the ball home from point-blank range.

The Bees' best opportunities on their return to the Football League came in the opening period. John Akinde teased his way past Mathieu Baudry before crossing for Michael Gash, but the striker stabbed the ball wide of the target from just eight yards with the goal at his mercy.

Akinde also provided a chance for Curtis Weston yet the midfielder could only send his header sailing over the crossbar from a similar distance as Barnet failed to find the net.
