Matt Fryatt made his first team debut in 2003 after rising through the ranks at the Bescot Stadium. Fryatt then moved to Carlisle United to gain first team experience. Once he returned to Walsall he had a regular first team place as the 2003/04 season came to an end. Whilst he was at Walsall he made 49 league starts and scored 27 goals in the process.
