Boss Nigel Pearson urged Leicester to ensure their destiny remains in their hands after they blew the race for survival wide open.
The Foxes snatched a last-gasp 3-2 win at West Brom on Saturday to move just three points from safety.
Jamie Vardy's injury-time winner earned back-to-back Barclays Premier League wins for Pearson's side, although they remain bottom.
Pearson was assistant manager at the Baggies when, in 2005, they became the first team in Barclays Premier League history to survive despite being bottom at Christmas.
Sunderland managed the feat last season and with Leicester having been rooted to the foot since November Pearson knows what it takes.
"The most difficult thing in that experience, in those final games we knew if we got it to the last day and still been in it, we've got a chance," he said.
"Our penultimate game that season was Manchester United away and we got one of the most bizarre draws ever but it gave us a chance.
"We have to make sure our destiny remains with our own results and whenever that's the case there is a realistic opportunity so that's what we're aiming to do."
Leicester fought back twice after Darren Fletcher and Craig Gardner put the Baggies ahead, in between David Nugent's equaliser.
Robert Huth grabbed a second leveller with 10 minuted left before Vardy won it in stoppage time and the striker is eyeing a third straight win.
"We're back to three points behind now with a game in hand. And hopefully we will win again next week (against Swansea)," he said.
"It's the same as it always is. But we know we're going into every game to make it back to back three points. Next week we'll try and make it three out of three."
Vardy had double delight after taking the players' Grand National sweepstake by picking winner Many Clouds.
"I've won the sweepstake on the National so I'm buzzing. It's been a pretty decent day," he added.
"I just go to racing for the giggle.
"Winning the sweepstake was nice, but three points were the main thing."
Albion are seven points above the bottom three after suffering successive home defeats to QPR and Leicester.
Defender Joleon Lescott insisted the Baggies were confident of survival but admitted they still needed the points.
"Yes, 100 per cent," he said. "We need more points - we can't rely on others not getting results.
"We need to dig in. The way it stands, it's in our hands and that's the way you want it to be.
"If you ask the teams below us which position they'd rather be in, they'd say ours. On paper it might have looked as though QPR and Leicester were easier games due to the positions they were in.
"But I'd say they need the points more than anyone else we're going to face.
"Every game's cup final now, that's the way we've been thinking but it's probably hitting home now that we're in the mix."
