Leicester's Thai chief plays down O'Neill move

Leicester's Thai owners have played down talk of an approach for Martin O'Neill as they search for a new manager after Sven Goran Eriksson's departure.

Foxes chairman Vichai Raksriaksorn and vice-chairman Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn are searching for a new boss after sacking former England and Manchester City coach Eriksson.

Eriksson, who had been in charge of the Championship outfit for just a year, was dismissed on Monday following Saturday's 3-0 home defeat against struggling Millwall.

Backed by Raksriaksorn's cash, Eriksson had embarked on a £12 million spending spree that saw Leicester installed as promotion favourites, but he was axed after they won just five of their 13 games so far this season.

Former Leicester boss O'Neill, who has been out of work since parting ways with Aston Villa last year, is firm favourite with bookmakers for the vacancy, with former Fulham chief Mark Hughes also a candidate.

O'Neill twice led the club to League Cup glory in 1997 and 2000, as well as promotion to the Premier League and a successful stint in the top flight, but the Raksriaksorns have not had contact with him yet.

Asked if he intended to approach O'Neill about the position, Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn told Sky Sports News: "I don't want to say that because I have to open my mind now, not just what the news or the fans want.

"I have to listen to everyone and make a decision very carefully.

"The next manager should be taking us to the Premier League and I think he has to know this league because it's very tough, very tight."

Raksriaksorn was upset at Eriksson's departure but conceded there was no choice given Leicester's desire for promotion this season.

He added: "Sven is a good man, a very, very nice man and actually I am sad, but life has to move on. I think he had to move on."
