Leicester V Porto: Talking Points - Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez are fresh and ready to rock

26 September 2016 15:38

Leicester host Porto at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday in their first-ever Champions League home game.

The Foxes beat Club Brugge 3-0 in their opening Group G match to put them top of the early table.

Here, we look at the talking points ahead of their return to European action.

WILL JAMIE VARDY AND RIYAD MAHREZ BENEFIT FROM A REST?

The pair were taken off at half-time of the defeat at Manchester United with the Foxes already 4-0 down. It was clear Ranieri had one eye on their Champions League fixture as he tries to negotiate this spell of seven games in 22 days, which started with the 4-1 loss at Liverpool earlier this month. The Italian has maintained he would rotate his squad during the hectic schedule and will expect his star pair to repay him with a performance against Porto. Demarai Gray scored and impressed after replacing Mahrez but the Algeria winger is unlikely to be displaced just yet.

HOW WILL LEICESTER COPE AT HOME IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE?

It is the club's first-ever Champions League home game and their first in Europe since 2000. The players shone in their 3-0 win at Club Brugge and looked like they had played at that level for years and now must recreate that performance at the King Power Stadium. They have lost just twice in all competitions in the last year at home - an FA Cup defeat to Tottenham in January and last week's EFL Cup loss to Chelsea - and have generally reacted well to setbacks when they have returned home.

CAN LEICESTER FIX THEIR FADING FORM?

The Foxes were thumped 4-1 at Manchester United on Saturday, conceding four first-half goals, and boss Claudio Ranieri has urged his team to get physical again in the box - despite the threat of conceding penalties. It was their third Premier League defeat of the season - having lost just three times during their march to the title last season - with their defence already faltering. Before their 3-0 win at Club Brugge earlier this month the Foxes lost 4-1 at Liverpool and recovered well to also beat Burnley 3-0 in the league. Ranieri must hope their next step into the unknown will inspire his side.

WILL THE FOXES SOLVE THEIR DEFENSIVE ISSUES?

Leicester have conceded 12 goals in their last five games in all competitions, including eight in their last two outings having shipped four against Manchester United and Chelsea last week. It is a far cry to their mean streak of last season where, in the final 20 games, they conceded just 11 goals. Already this term they have leaked 11 goals in the Premier League as the reliable duo of Wes Morgan and Robert Huth struggle to find last season's form.

WILL ISLAM SLIMANI CONTINUE HIS FINE SCORING RECORD AGAINST PORTO?

The former Sporting Lisbon striker has scored five goals in his last three games against Porto, including the equaliser in his farewell appearance as Sporting won 2-1 last month. He then joined Leicester for a club record £29million and has a quick reunion with his former rivals. The Algeria forward was given the nickname the 'Dragon Slayer' in Portugal because of his tendency to score against Porto, who are called the Dragons, and he has already scored twice on his Premier League debut for Leicester.
