Eriksson resigned over Maynard

Leicester manager Sven-Goran Eriksson concedes he is unlikely to make another bid for striker Nicky Maynard, despite watching him fire Bristol City to a 2-1 win in the npower Championship at the King Power Stadium.

The Robins have rejected three bids from Leicester for the 24-year-old and his two goals, either side of David Nugent's leveller, condemned the Foxes to a second home defeat in the space of four days. Maynard, who is out of contract in the summer, has so far refused to sign a new deal at Ashton Gate.

"He is always dangerous because of the pace he has," said former England manager Eriksson, who also confirmed Leicester had missed out on signing Everton striker Jermaine Beckford.

"You always need two players against him. His goalscoring record is very, very good and he is a very good player. But I am not sure that the player wants to come or the club wants to sell so it is very difficult."

The defeat came hot on the heels of Saturday's 2-0 reverse to Reading and Eriksson knows his side have to shake off the losing habit if they are to achieve their pre-season target of promotion.

"It was very bad to lose the second time in a few days at home. At least we played better football. I think we played well enough and created chances to not lose," Eriksson added.

"If we give them a gift then it becomes very difficult so I can't say that I am happy but I felt, quality-wise, we were at least better than Saturday. We have to lift the players and ourselves because we can't go on losing games. We all know the ambitions we have ."

Bristol City manager Millen expects to receive further interest in Maynard on the back of this performance but he is hoping to keep his star man.

"We would react like we have all summer (if there was another bid)," Millen said.

"Nicky is committed to the club. No-one has given us any money anywhere near what we would think about selling him for. So there is no decision to be made. We want to keep him and he knows that. We have made him a fantastic offer. My phone will be off now for the next 10 days and I won't be drinking with Sven!"
