Consistency The Key For Wellens

Richie Wellens believes that the arrival of Sven-Goran Eriksson has brought a new air of confidence into the City squad. After a poor start to the Championship campaign, the Foxes looked in trouble at the foot of the table - mainly due to their apparent determination to concede goals - this emphasised by that unforgettable 5-1 away beating handed out at the hands of Portsmouth. However, Eriksson's appointment has steadied the ship somewhat - with the side taking seven points from their first four Championship matches into the Eriksson era. Saturday's single goal home win against Darren Ferguson's fellow strugglers Preston saw the Foxes keep only their second clean sheet of the season - and that weighed on the players minds as Preston stormed forward chasing what would have been an undeserved equaliser late in the game. Wellens said: 'A bigger lead would have given us a chance to relax and play a bit more but the win was a bit like our performances last season because we ground it out.' Having conceded 27 Championship goals in their opening 13 matches, seeing out the win was always going to be a tense affair on Saturday and Wellens added: 'With the way our season has gone, you drop a little bit deeper and get a little bit nervous.' But the play maker believes that Eriksson and his backroom staff have enforced a sense of unity and organisation in the team and this has helped to improve the sides' defensive displays of late, and in turn producing the results needed to send the Foxes on their way up the Championship table. 'I think you saw something of last season in the performance. there was a high tempo and we were getting in their faces, not dropping off and making them commit errors. 'We have to keep going. I feel we are as good as any team in the league. We've suffered from a lack of confidence and, when you keep chopping and changing the manager, it is difficult for every group of players. But we are past that now and we will start climbing the table.' The midfielder added. The Foxes will now begin preparing for their trip to Oakwell on Saturday where they face seventeenth placed Barnsley in what is sure to be another Championship six pointer.
