Dennis Wise is poised to take charge at Leeds United after a compensation package was agreed with League Two side Swindon Town.
Wise and his assistant Gus Poyet are now back in talks with the Elland Road club, after the Robins had earlier refused to allow discussions to start after failing to agree terms with the Whites.
Leeds have also confirmed that caretaker boss John Carver, who took over following Kevin Blackwell's sacking, has left the club.
A brief statement on the Championship club's official website confirmed: "Leeds United have agreed financial compensation with Swindon Town and have now been granted permission to discuss personal terms with both Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet, with a view to them filling the vacant managerial positions at the club."
Wise and Poyet took charge at Swindon in the summer and have positioned Town among the early-season front-runners.
However, their task at Elland Road would be to pull Leeds away from the wrong end of the Championship table, following a run of only three league wins in 13 games this term.
