Ian Bennett started his career in 1988 at QPR and moved to Newcastle United in March of the same season. In 1991 he signed for Peterborough United after he failed to make a single appearance at his 2 previous clubs. He eventually played 72 League games for Peterborough in the 2 and a half years he spent there. He moved to Birmingham City in 1993 for a fee of 325,000 pounds and for the next 5 seasons at Birmingham he was there number one, before losing his position to Kevin Poole due to an injury after making 287 League appearances. In 2004 he was loaned out to both Sheffield United and Coventry City before a transfer to Leeds in 2005.
