Leeds take six-point lead
26 Dec 2009 - 17:19:50
League One leaders Leeds United moved six points clear at the top of the table after coming from a goal behind to defeat Hartlepool United 3-1 at Elland Road.
Armann Bjornsson opened the scoring for the Pools, but a goal from Luciano Becchio and a brace from hotshot Jermaine Beckford sealed victory for the Whites.
Despite playing the entire second half with nine men, Charlton salvaged a 2-2 draw with Swindon thanks to a Miguel Angel Llera goal in injury time.
Jonjo Shelvey opened the scoring for the Addicks, before strikes from Charlie Austin and Billy Paynter put Swindon ahead until the final moments of the game, this after both Deon Burton and Sam Sodje were given red cards.
Grant Holt scored his 28th goal of 2009 in Norwich City's 2-0 win at home to Millwall, with Wes Hoolahan scoring the other for the Canaries.
Gillingham suffered only their second home defeat of the season as Brentford grabbed all three points at the Priestfield Stadium thanks to Ben Strevens' goal.
There was little Christmas cheer on display however, as both sides ended with ten men following red cards to the Gills' Josh Gowling and Bees striker Charlie MacDonald.
There was another red card at the Withdean Stadium, as Andrew Crofts became the seventh player to be sent off for Brighton in League One this term in their stalemate with Leyton Orient.
Lee Barnard, who has now scored nine of Southend's last 13 league goals, found the net in their derby with Colchester United, but it wasn't enough to overturn goals from Philip Ifil and Anthony Wordsworth for the U's in their 2-1 victory.
MK Dons secured a comfortable 4-1 win over Stockport County to give their supporters some Christmas cheer, thanks to goals from Jason Puncheon (2), Jermaine Easter and Nigel Quashie. Peter Thompson scored a consolation for County.
Southampton raced 2-0 ahead against Exeter in just half an hour thanks to goals from Lloyd James and Neil Trotman.
However, a goal from Exeter's Matt Taylor with a little over 20 minutes from time made it interesting until Papa Waigo scored a late goal to seal a 3-1 victory.
Yeovil enjoyed an emphatic 4-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Huish Park. Goals from Kieran Murtagh, Jean-Paul Kalala, Jonathan Obika and Sam Williams were enough to ensure a gloomy Christmas weekend for the Chairboys.
