Leeds United have confirmed Jonathon Douglas will be out for at least three months after damaging knee ligaments.
The Republic of Ireland international was stretchered off during last weekend's 1-1 draw with Walsall and afterwards boss Dennis Wise revealed he feared the worst.
Captain Douglas now faces a race against time to return to action before the end of the season.
"It looks like it could be three months minimum," Wise told the club's official website.
"We're hoping to have him back before the end of the season. He will see the surgeon on Monday and it all depends what he says.
"It's a real blow for us and for Dougie. He's a strong character and he's been leading well as captain. I've been really pleased with him."
