Leeds axe Blackwell

Leeds United have sacked manager Kevin Blackwell after a poor start to the Championship season. Former Sheffield United number two Blackwell took over at Elland Road in the summer of 2004, after a spell as assistant to both Peter Reid and Eddie Gray, but has been unable to move the club towards promotion back to the Premiership. Last season the Whites lost in the play-off final to Watford, but this term they are one but bottom of the table after winning only two of their opening eight league games. A brief statement on the club's official website read: "The board of Leeds United have terminated the contract of manager Kevin Blackwell. "The club would like to place on record its thanks to Kevin for the work he has put in over the past three-and-a-half years, the past two-and-a-half of which were as manager."
