Accrington also targeted McNeil but the club are unable to meet the wage demands of the tall forward, much to the frustration of boss John Coleman.
He told the Lancashire Telegraph: "I don't think that one's going to happen unfortunately.
"And Leeds won't let Martin out until they get another keeper in. We can't hang around forever."
