Southampton 3-1 Leeds, by Sean Markey aged 12.
A 12-year-old's version of accounts on Saturdays game at St Mary's. Leeds United were up against newly promoted Southampton at St.Mary's with the Whites hoping to get their Championship campaign off to a positive start. However, they did have to play without strike-force Luciano Becchio and David Somma whilst The Saints were also without wannabe wonderkid Alex Chamberlain! Southampton got off to a great start with some good set-pieces until they finally broke the deadlock when Dean Hammond's long range shot beat goalkeeper Andy Lonergan to put the home side 1-0 up. Leeds did have a glimmer of hope at one stage with skipper Jonny Howson's half volley only finding the keepers arms until The Saints found a second goal, when Adam Lallana's comfortable shot hit the post and went in leaving Leeds chasing shadows. With Leeds desperately waiting for the half time whistle, Southampton were bombing forward yet again with Lallana's 12-yard shot was surely going in but Lonergan was there to stop them geting an embarrasing 3rd. When the second half kicked off, Leeds knew they had to get an early goal to get back into the game, and with the fans cheering their hearts off, no spirit found the Leeds player's as Southampton finally got a 3rd. David Connolly smoothly slided the ball into the bottom right hand corner with a cool finish silencing the United supporters. Leeds should have got a goal back when Billy Paynter was in acres of space but goalkeeper Kelvin Davies pulled off a spectalular save to keep hold of a clean sheet. United did have some penalty appeals with winger Max Gradel getting fustrated with the referee but Southampton could have even made it 4 when Richard Chaplow smashed a shot against the post. Leeds fans' did have something to cheer about in the end when Aaron Martin 'handled' the ball inside his own penalty area for Max Gradel to score and smash it home for little consolation.
