Classy Leeds tame Shrews

Neil Warnock's new-look Leeds cruised past Shrewsbury in the first round of the Capital One Cup as goals from Luciano Becchio, summer signings Luke Varney and David Norris and Ross McCormack's penalty secured an easy 4-0 win.

Tony Mowbray's Middlesbrough beat Bury 2-1 at Gigg Lane.

A side containing five new faces saw off their League One opponents thanks to goals from Marvin Emnes and debutant Emanuel Ledesma. Mark Hughes pulled one back for the hosts, who had Efe Sodje sent off in injury time.

Two goals from Max Clayton and Mathias Pogba helped Crewe Alexandra to a 5-0 win over Hartlepool at Gresty Road. Ajay Leitch-Smith was also on target for the Railwaymen.

An eighth-minute strike from Ashley Hemmings gave Walsall a 1-0 win over Brentford, while Matthew Robson struck after 39 minutes to see Carlisle progress at the expense of Accrington.
