Sources at Leeds United and across the Internet are reporting that new Leeds United owner, Massimo Cellino, is determined to do a Viv Nicholson and “spend, spend, spend” his money from the sale of his Serie A club Cagliari, which was sold yesterday.
If this is true, then once any debts are dealt with, the new owner is left with a very large amount of money to spend it on, so fans across the world are wondering just where that cash will be spent. £35 million is a lot of money to spend and he is not likely to do it recklessly, so where should, or could, he spend that cash?
One possible area is the ground and training ground issue, which he had said he would resolve. And whilst that is on the cards, as it were, for future growth, what is needed more are players of the calibre to stay with Leeds and get them up to the Premier League, where all Leeds fans believe they should be.
There are hints that Sebastian Eriksson may come from Cagliari, once recovered from knee surgery, but that immediately puts a question mark in the works. Who wants to employ someone who may have had the speed taken out of him by surgery? Surely Mr Cellino is more concerned with younger, fitter players to spend his hard earned on? Perhaps the money will go towards the academy players to develop them through to the first team?
But who will these people be? Who will he buy next?
One thing is for sure; once the new Coach situation is sorted, and that has to be his priority, his next job is to bolster the defence, strengthen the attacking options and make it so players want to play in white and not consider going off somewhere else, should their careers rise through the Championship and its successes.
Perhaps he should consult with the fans as to who to sign? After all, if it was your money, who would you spend it on?
