Zarate ponders Italy future

Lazio's Argentinian winger Mauro Zarate has been approached about pledging his international allegiance to Italy.

The 22-year-old has impressed since joining the Serie A outfit in the summer of 2008 and has been contacted about a possible future with the Azzurri.

His brother and agent, Sergio, told Radio Sei: "A month and a half ago, an FIGC director called me proposing the possibility of Mauro being selected for the Azzurri.

"I told him that at the moment we are waiting for a call from Diego Maradona detailing the list of Argentinian players who will go to South Africa.

"If Mauro isn't a part of it then we are open to considering the possibility of playing for Italy."
