Reja set to take Lazio helm

Edy Reja is set to be appointed the new coach of Serie A strugglers Lazio after leaving Hajduk Split.

The 64-year-old former Napoli coach was rumoured to be the number of choice of the Lazio board should they sack under-pressure tactician Davide Ballardini.

Ballardini was finally axed on Tuesday night with the Rome club languishing in the Serie A relegation zone and hours later Reja resigned from his role with the Croatian club.

"Edoardo Reja is no longer the coach of Hajduk," confirmed a brief club statement.

"Immediately upon leaving the stadium Reja went to Rome where he will tomorrow (Wednesday) continue his coaching job in Lazio."

Italian Reja, whose coaching career spans 30 years, added: "It was a difficult decision, I'm leaving with a heavy heart. I gave my word to Lazio president Claudio Lotito."
