Larissa FC - Another ex-Champion opts for relegation

AEL or Larissa FC, the former League Champions and Cup Winners, will be joining AEK Athens FC in the Football League 2, the semi-professional third national division. This time, their relegation was not due to bad results.

Larissa, a club that has been relegated and promoted many times in the last few years, has chosen to be relegated this time due to severe financial problems. Being one of only six clubs to win the Greek Championship, Larissa has one of the strongest fan bases in Greece. With an impressive new stadium (AEL FC ARENA), one Championship and two National Cups, AEL’s relegation becomes the second big surprise in this year’s semi-professional football.

Following their success in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons, the club has had a bumpy road over the past few years. Finishing mid-table in the Football League in the last season was just one of the many indications that something had to change.

Let’s hope that this time their choice will help them to emerge stronger and more determined.
