Verbeek replaces Advocaat

26 Jun 2006 - 09:20:36

Korea Republic have named Dutchman Pim Verbeek as their new boss following their exit from the World Cup.

Verbeek had been assistant to fellow countryman Dick Advocaat who stepped down after Korea Republic lost 2-0 to Switzerland on Friday to confirm their elimination from the tournament. He also worked as assistant to previous boss Guus Hiddink.

Advocaat is set to take up a post as coach of Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

Verbeek, who has previously coached Holland Antilles and Kyoto Purple Sanga in Japan's professional J-League, has signed a two-year contract with the 2002 World Cup semi-finalists.

"Verbeek has received offers to coach several professional and national teams, but he had a greater interest in the head coach job for the Korea Republicn team, with which he has participated in two World Cup finals," said Korea Football Association official Lee Young-moo.
