Motherwell boss trusts in youth

Midfielder Ross Forbes, 20, and 18-year-old defender Shaun Hutchinson marked their first senior appearances at the stadium with goals as Motherwell recorded a comfortable Scottish Premier League victory. Gannon named eight under-21s in his squad but the points never looked in danger after John Sutton's accomplished finish gave Well a 14th-minute lead. Forbes' 45th-minute penalty took his tally to five goals this season after Gannon handed him an unexpected debut in the Europa League opener against Llanelli. And the former Dundalk and Stockport manager is happy to keep trusting his youngsters after an unbeaten start to the SPL season. "It's all about talent - the experience will come," Gannon said. "When I first started my job at Stockport people kept talking about the fact we had no experience in the team. "If you're equipped with the skills to do the job, then I trust them to do a job." Jim O'Brien, who at 21 was among the more experienced players in the Motherwell team, had a hand in all three goals. The winger hailed Gannon's football knowledge as he explained what he had brought to the club following Mark McGhee's exit for Aberdeen. "I think he's more tactical on the training field," O'Brien said. "He likes to get every little detail right and, as you can see, it's working for us." Gannon, who was "a little bit disappointed" his side did not score more goals before Jamie Hamill brought a touch of respectability to the scoreline with a clever lob in the 88th minute, is continuing attempts to bring in a striker and a right-back. "I was a little bit disappointed we weren't able to close deals in time for the game," he said. "We have got a week. We have targeted a few and hopefully these deals will come off. "The players are very keen because they're frustrated at the opportunities at their current clubs. It would be great for them to come here. "It would give the squad a good balance to protect from injuries and if the young players lose form." Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies was scathing of his team's first-half display but he has been assured by his players they will bounce back during Tuesday's Co-operative Insurance Cup clash against Morton at Rugby Park. "The response to a few harsh words at half-time was great," Jefferies said. "We could have lost more goals but we had to push forward. We virtually went 4-2-4 in the second half with Conor Sammon pushing out left and Mehdi Taouil helping Kevin Kyle through the middle. "We were more of a threat and had more of the play and kept Motherwell more at bay. "I also got the response I wanted in the dressing room afterwards. They said they would put it right on Tuesday."
