Killie have the Wright stuff - Frazer

In the past, the Ayrshire club have benefited from home grown talent in the shape of Kris Boyd, Steven Naismith and Colin Nish but have been without a prolific goalscorer in recent times. The Rugby Park outfit were saved from the drop two years ago by the implosion of crisis club Gretna and found themselves dragged into a dog fight at the end of last term too. Wright puts that poor form down to impotence in front of goal but believes strike duo Kevin Kyle and Conor Sammon can make all the difference this time around. The defender admits their fans deserve some success this season and hopes this is the year Killie can deliver. "At the start of every season our objective is to get into the top six," he said. "The season before last we were unlucky with injuries. Last season we just couldn't score a goal. "This season we have big Kevin in the team and hopefully we can keep him fit. Conor Sammon is also scoring goals as well so, if we can keep the goals coming, we can keep challenging. "We could tighten up in the defence as well but there were times last year when we looked like we just wouldn't score a goal. "You are always likely to be under pressure and concede a goal so it's helpful to have someone who can put the ball in the net and take the pressure off you." Sammon - who netted a double in the midweek Co-operative Insurance Cup win over Morton - appears vastly improved from last season and Wright believes he is flourishing as a result of his partnership with Kyle. He added: "Kevin is good for Conor, he talks to him all the time in training and encourages him. "Conor looks like a completely different player from last season, he is more confident and has looked stronger and faster." This weekend sees Kilmarnock play host to a St Mirren side keen to build on last week's draw with Dundee United as they search for their first SPL win of the season. "I will be a hard game," said Wright. "They drew with Dundee United last Saturday so they are going to be no pushovers. They were also really unlucky to get beat 2-1 in the last couple of minutes at Easter Road the week before so it will be tough. "It was good that we won on Tuesday night to get back to winning ways. "If we can perform the way we did against Hamilton on the opening day of the season, we should have a good chance."
