Hay: Calderwood making an impact

Manuel Pascali's late goal proved the difference between the teams at Rugby Park and set up a fifth-round contest with Inverness at the same venue.[LNB]The game was Calderwood's second in his first four days in charge, giving him little time to institute tactical changes.[LNB]But Hay feels the team have already taken his principles on board.[LNB]"He has got his points of view across in the fact he is encouraging us to get the ball down and pass it and be patient, and not just be lumping it forward," the 32-year-old said.[LNB]"We're trying to take that on board and be a bit more patient and pass the ball.[LNB]"I think we showed that in spells against Falkirk when we got it across the midfield and got it wide and got crosses into the box. I think the goals will come."[LNB]The triumph was only Kilmarnock's second in 11 games and proved a much-needed boost following the home 3-0 defeat by Motherwell two days earlier.[LNB]Calderwood will now relish the chance to work with his players on the training ground before they visit his former club Aberdeen in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League on Saturday.[LNB]"It's not ideal when you play Saturday and Monday but it was probably a good thing that we got back out on the pitch as quickly as possible," the left-back said.[LNB]"It was a big improvement from Saturday, more what the manager wants us to do.[LNB]"We took his instructions on board but there is still a long way to go.[LNB]"We hope we can build on this and get up to Aberdeen and get a positive result. Hopefully there will be even more improvement with a few days to work on the Aberdeen game."[LNB]While Calderwood's priority is moving away from relegation danger, Killie now have a decent chance of progressing to a quarter-final with a home tie against Inverness to come on February 6.[LNB]But Terry Butcher's side have already knocked out an SPL side thanks to a 2-0 win over Motherwell.[LNB]"It was a fantastic result for them because Motherwell beat us soundly on Saturday," Hay said.[LNB]"It just shows you how hard a game it's going to be for us. But we have a few league games first so we will concentrate on them."[LNB][LNB]
