Kilmarnock defender James Fowler is hoping to earn a new contract at Rugby Park by impressing in the coming months.
The 23-year-old's current deal runs out in the summer and he is aware that he needs to show up well to extend his stay with Killie.
He told the Evening Times: "I have been told that the football budget for next season will not be determined until the summer and so I don't know what situation I will be in.
"Scottish football is in a pretty awful state and the future is uncertain for a lot of players. I have to try and impress Kilmarnock to win a new deal.
"If they don't want to offer me anything, then hopefully another club will come in and make an offer. I am playing to secure my livelihood."
