Extension only last resort - Mixu

Kilmarnock manager Mixu Paatelainen would not be opposed to an extension to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League season to cope with a potential fixture backlog - but only as a last resort.

The weather conditions have claimed more than a dozen fixtures over the last few weeks, including Rangers' rescheduled trip to Dundee United.

Paatelainen said: "If something like that was necessary, then okay, it can be done. Hopefully it won't be done. But, if the weather conditions are so bad that the matches really have to be called off and that's the only option, we should take it."

He added: "If there is more snow every day and freezing temperatures, that will cause problems.

"But I think we should be a little bit tougher as well when it comes to calling games off. I don't think we should be willing to call matches off too easily.

"Do we call off Christmas shopping when the pavements are icy? I don't think so.

"I do appreciate that you need to think about supporters' safety and travelling on the motorways and travelling conditions but I don't think the matches should be called off too easily."
