Calderwood returns with Killie

Kilmarnock have confirmed the appointment of former Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood as their new manager.

The Scottish Premier League strugglers were on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Jim Jefferies on Monday.

Jefferies' eight-year reign at Rugby Park was ended with the Ayrshire club languishing down in 11th place in the table.

Killie chairman Michael Johnston held talks with both Calderwood and Queen of the South boss Gordon Chisholm earlier in the week and has now decided that the ex-Aberdeen manager is the right man for the job.

Calderwood has been out of work since leaving Pittodrie when his contract expired at the end of last season.

The 54-year-old former Dunfermline manager stepped down despite guiding the Dons into Europe.

"I am just delighted to get back into the game," he said after being unveiled in the hot-seat.

"It is a famous old club and we (he and assistant Jimmy Nicholl) have been out of the game for so long and was there something going to happen in the next three or four months?"

Calderwood is believed to have been handed an initial contract that runs until the end of the season.
