Jimmy Calderwood has been unveiled as the new manager of Kilmarnock.

Calderwood, who had been out of work since leaving Aberdeen in May last year, was presented by the club on Thursday at a media conference at Rugby Park.

The former Dunfermline boss replaces Jim Jefferies, whose near eight-year reign ended on Monday.

Calderwood has agreed a contract until the end of the season after beating candidates including Gordon Chisholm and Tommy McLean.

He will again be assisted by Jimmy Nicholl but the finances may not be available for him to take Sandy Clark, who was his first-team coach at Pittodrie.

Chairman Michael Johnston said: "It's fantastic that Jimmy was available to take up this position at short notice.

"His SPL credentials are well known and he ticks all the right boxes. We are looking forward to working with Jimmy to at least the remainder of the season and hopefully beyond that."

When asked why he had chosen to return to football with Kilmarnock, Calderwood replied: "Because they asked me, as simple as that. It's a famous old club and we have been out of the game for what seems like so long.

"Was there something going to happen in the next three or four months? We got the opportunity to come, (also) the quality of the squad (played a part) and we just love being involved in the game.

"We got the chance, we weighed it up, the chairman was convincing, and we decided to do it. I think it's good for the club that it's only four months and it's good for us also."
