Life after Shutt opens with a win

Kettering Town skipper Lee Howarth helped guide the Poppies to a surprise 2-0 win at Barnet, following the departure of former player-manager Carl Shutt.

Howarth was kept out of the action by injury, but shared the dug-out duties with youth team coach Dominic Genovese, as Town won thanks to an own goal and Lee Clarke's first goal for the club.

Afterwards, Howarth told the Northants Evening Telegraph: "It was a real battle.

"We stood up well to a lot of pressure and defended magnificently. We got bodies in the way of shots and Ian Bowling made some great saves.

"Perhaps we rode our luck a bit, but then we've not had very much of that this season. Everyone worked hard for the result."

Meanwhile, Leigh's 0-0 draw with Gravesend ensured that the Poppies will finish bottom of the table and will definitely be relegated after just one season back in the Nationwide Conference.
