Long wait over for Buffon

Juventus were in a celebratory mood after overcoming Monaco to reach their first Champions League semi-final since 2003.

The Italian giants held the Ligue 1 side to a goalless draw on Wednesday at the Stade Louis II to progress 1-0 on aggregate.

"We wanted to go through to the next round at all costs," Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon told Italian TV station Mediaset. "We knew this was a great opportunity and after 12 years, we wanted to honour the history of Juve."

Buffon was a member of the Juventus side that finished runners-up to AC Milan in the competition 12 years ago.

"I really didn't think I would have to wait this long to return to this stage of the competition," the 37-year-old goalkeeper said. "But as the journey was very difficult, we can enjoy this result even more."

Juventus had previously won 3-0 at Borussia Dortmund to go through 5-1 on aggregate to the quarter-finals.

"There was a lot more tension here than in Dortmund, as we knew Monaco were much more complicated to face and we had a slender lead, so every tiny error could cost double," Buffon said. "Therefore, I think the tension gripped us more than usual.

"Of course, we know that we haven't achieved anything yet."

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri enthused about his team's performance.

Allegri, who replaced Antonio Conte last summer, said: "I am pleased for my players, as I think they deserved this semi-final for all the work they have done in the Champions League.

"We have only lost twice by 1-0 margins, undeservedly in my view, and we always did well in the other games."

Juventus lost to Atletico Madrid and Olympiacos in the group stage of the competition.

"This team has to keep going and above all improving," he said, "as we are in the Champions League semi-finals and the Coppa Italia final.

"At the moment, I am very happy."

Juventus have joined Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid in the final four, and will learn their next opponents on Friday.

"These are the three biggest clubs in Europe," Allegri said. "I can certainly guarantee it will be a completely different game against these sides than with Monaco."

Juventus resume Serie A action on Sunday when they take on city rivals Torino.

Allegri's side are on course to clinch their fourth straight Serie A title, holding a 15-point lead at the top of the table with seven games remaining.
