Del Piero and TV star Dempsey launch team
Italian football great Alessandro Del Piero has formed a team with US TV star Patrick Dempsey which will compete in this year's Le Mans 24-hour race, the race organisers l'Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) announced on Tuesday.
The team will be known as Dempsey/Del Piero Racing and, while 38-year-old Del Piero will not be one of the three drivers, he said he was delighted to be getting involved in another of his favourite sports.
"I have been passionate about motor sports since I was a little boy," the 2006 World Cup winner said on his website.
"I am delighted to have the opportunity to form a team with Patrick. We are hoping to compete at the highest level and our main objective is to win a world title."
Dempsey -- who finished ninth in his only previous appearance in 2009 but took third in the 2011 Daytona 24 hour race -- will be partnered by Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti, although their engine provider Mazda is running behind with the development of the motor.
Dempsey/Del Piero Racing are also aiming to run two cars in this season's American Le Mans Series.
