Versatile Parma defender Daniele Bonera is on standby to replace thigh injury victim Gianluca Zambrotta in Italy's World Cup squad.
The Juventus full-back has been ruled out of the Azzurri's first two Group E matches against Ghana and the USA, but coach Marcello Lippi is keen to have one of his most influential players available for the later stages of the tournament.
However, that depends on the results of the next set of tests on Zambrotta's left thigh.
"Bonera will also be at the Coverciano training ground on Monday, seeing as Zambrotta's condition isn't good," said Lippi.
"Gianluca will have a scan on Tuesday and we will evaluate the situation after we've seen the results."
The Italy boss had better news about Alessandro Nesta, who limped out of Friday's goalless friendly against Ukraine.
"Alessandro felt a twinge in the same muscle he strained last week, but he should be okay," said Lippi.
"After the tournament kicks off, there'll be a game every five days, so it's not easy to recover."
