Town open talks with Walters

Ipswich Town have opened talks with Jon Walters aimed at keeping the striker at Portman Road.

Walters, 25, still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his existing deal, but manager Jim Magilton is hoping to tie him down to a longer contract following a summer of speculation linking him with a return to his native north west.

"We are talking to Jon about a new contract," he told the club's official website.

"There was a lot of speculation about him through the summer but he is a very important player for us.

"We have taken him from the lower divisions and given him a platform to come and play and he is a catalyst for a lot of good things that we are doing here."
