Town on trail of Charisteas

11 Jul 2008 - 12:58:57

Ipswich Town have confirmed their interest in signing Greece international forward Angelos Charisteas.

The 28-year-old is currently contracted to German side Nurnberg, but has been linked with an exit following their relegation from the Bundesliga.

The former Ajax striker wrote himself into Greek folklore by scoring the winner in their 1-0 Final victory against Portugal at Euro 2004.

He was also part of the Greece side that failed to make it out of the group stages at Euro 2008.

"We've spoken to Nurnberg about the player and, although no fee has been agreed, we aren't too far away," Town chief executive Derek Bowden told the club's official website.

"They've given us permission to speak to Charisteas and we've been in touch with his representatives and I'm sure we'll be speaking again."
