Ipswich Town have failed in a 'cheeky' bid to bring former striker Darren Bent back to Portman Road.

Bent left the Tractor Boys for Charlton Athletic in 2005 before a £15million move to Totteham Hotspur last summer.

The 24-year-old has struggled to hold down a first-team place at White Hart Lane this season but will not be rejoining Ipswich on loan.

"Darren was having a tricky spell at Spurs and we made a cheeky enquiry," manager Jim Magilton told the club's official website.

"We want to bring in players that will raise the bar and Darren would obviously do that.

"But he's very much in the fold at Tottenham and it's not going to happen. We just asked the question."

Meanwhile, the Tractor Boys have completed the loan signing of Manchester United defender Danny Simpson until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old right-back has made eight first-team appearances for the Red Devils this season.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "The boy needs games and I've allowed him to go to Ipswich until the end of the season.

"They're a good football team and that will suit him fine."
