Smith faces long absence

Ipswich Town teenager Tommy Smith has had surgery on the broken ankle he suffered in training last week.

The 18-year-old defender had the operation in Ipswich Hospital on Friday and is expected to be sidelined until March.

Town physio Matt Byard told the club's official website: "The operation went very well. Our specialist, Mark Bowditch, has told us that he expects Tommy to make a full recovery.

"He'll be on crutches for six to eight weeks and then we'll start his rehab from there. We expect Tommy to be out for about six months."
