Wickham on song as Clarets struggle

Connor Wickham enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a fine goalscoring display to help Ipswich put another dent in Burnley`s npower Championship play-off hopes. The highly-rated 18-year-old striker, whose performances for the Tractor Boys have attracted admiring glances from a clutch of leading Barclays Premier League clubs, struck in the 24th minute after David Norris` deadlock-breaker. Norris swept home a 17th-minute opener with a neat left-foot finish and Wickham`s strike put Paul Jewell`s men 2-0 up and in total control. Jay Rodriguez hit back for Burnley in the 68th minute with a well-taken strike to make it 2-1 but there was to be no equaliser for Eddie Howe`s men as Ipswich held on. The Clarets` hopes of a top-six finish are beginning to fade and they have now picked up just one point from their last four matches. Ipswich are effectively playing for pride in the remainder of the campaign as they are safe from the drop but too far adrift of the top six to realistically claim a top-six berth.
