Inverness Caledonian Thistle director of football Graeme Bennett has warned that the club will not be held to ransom by players coming to the end of their current contracts.
Midfielder Russell Duncan has spoken of his disappointment at the offer put forward by the Highlanders, but Bennett says that budgets have to be kept in check.
He told the Press & Journal: "I was disappointed by Russell Duncan's comments and I don't think the players are doing themselves any favours.
"We have made it clear from the outset we had a budget which needs to be adhered to and we have always tried to run the club properly as a business."
Duncan had earlier told the Daily Record: "The gaffer spoke to me at the start of last week and I knocked back the initial offer. I'm only keen to stay if the offer is right.
"If not, there comes a time you have to start looking after yourself. I'll be 28 at the start of next season, so I think that time has come for me.
"The next contract I sign will be a big one for me, probably the biggest of my career."
